As Bernstein analyst Gautam Chhugani highlighted in a note to clients Thursday, BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) has been an early winner among the spot bitcoin ETFs that were approved last week. However, the fund has seen about $1 billion in net outflows over the past week, according to FactSet. Even with the GBTC outflows, the spot bitcoin funds have still seen hundreds of millions of net inflows, according to FactSet. "GBTC at 150 bps fee vs. ~20bps fee for rest, would mean cheaper ETFs will continue to absorb GBTC outflows. In that context, $900m of net inflows remains impressive," Bernstein's Chhugani said in a note.

SEC Chair Gary Gensler continues to issue stern warnings when it comes to crypto investments, but that's not holding back activity. For the $30 trillion advised wealth management industry, the floodgates could be about to open. "For the vast majority of people, a low-cost bitcoin ETF is going to be the easiest way to do that," Hougan said. According to data from Robinhood , 81% of bitcoin ETF trading volume in the first week was in individual accounts, with the rest in retirement accounts. In a report on its website in October, Galaxy Digital said the "strongest marginal improvement" occurred when portfolios moved from a 0% to 1% bitcoin allocation.

SEC approves bitcoin ETFs for some investment firms

“While we approved the listing and trading of certain spot bitcoin ETP shares today, we did not approve or endorse bitcoin. The SEC had a deadline of January 10 to offer a decision for just one of the 11 firms that applied to offer bitcoin ETFs. Bitcoin ETFs, like bitcoin, carry risks for investorsFor those considering jumping on the bitcoin bandwagon, it’s important to note that the price of a bitcoin will be just as volatile whether you invest in it directly yourself or through an ETF. Those sentiments have been echoed by many financial advisers and the investor watchdog group Better Markets, which strongly opposed the SEC’s approval of bitcoin ETFs. The full list of companies that got SEC approval to launch bitcoin ETFs are: Ark Invest together with 21 Shares; Bitwise, BlackRock, Fidelity, Franklin Templeton, Grayscale, Hashdex, Invesco, WisdomTree, Valkyrie and VanEck.

Source: Bloomberg/SEC.govHow will a spot bitcoin trade relative to bitcoin and bitcoin futures? One of the main questions is how well a spot bitcoin ETF will track bitcoin and bitcoin futures. Simeon Hyman, ProShares' global investment strategist who manages the largest bitcoin futures ETF, the ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) that launched in October 2021, noted that bitcoin futures ETFs have tracked bitcoin "fairly well." Some are concerned that the creation and redemption process that was agreed upon to create spot bitcoin ETFs could result in a bitcoin ETF trading at a premium to its NAV.

November was perhaps the most significant month of this year for the crypto industry and gave bitcoin a strong setup as investors look toward 2024. "It's safe to say that the market is grinding higher in anticipation of a spot bitcoin ETF approval in January," said Ryan Rasmussen, research analyst at Bitwise Asset Management. "Some investors will continue trying to front-run the potential spot bitcoin ETF approval, but December is essentially a 'wait and see' period for bitcoin," he said. November is a historically strong month for bitcoin. "It tells us that investors are interested in more than just the potential for a spot bitcoin ETF.

Altcoins were in rally mode this week after lagging bitcoin in its recent climb to new 2023 highs. Bitcoin and ether have been separate from this trend recently, with more investors appearing to treat them as a safety trade compared to smaller, riskier altcoins. "Historically we've seen bitcoin rally, then Ethereum, then alts, and that pattern seems to be repeating as this bull market heats up," he said. "We see as a more likely scenario existing capital shifting from existing bitcoin products such as the Grayscale bitcoin trust, bitcoin futures ETFs and publicly listed bitcoin mining companies, into the newly-approved spot bitcoin ETFs," he said. He also said that bitcoin ETFs already exist in Canada and Europe but haven't garnered much interest from investors since their inception.

Mainstream investment giants such as BlackRock (BLK.N) and Fidelity, as well as crypto-focused firms like Grayscale, have filed applications for spot bitcoin ETFs. U.S. crypto firm NYDIG estimates demand for a spot bitcoin ETF at around $30 billion. Their calculation compares the sizes of the gold and bitcoin ETFs - $210 billion versus $28.8 billion, respectively - and adjusts them for their relative volatility. BlackRock declined to comment on its pending spot bitcoin ETF, other than to confirm that it is still awaiting final SEC approval. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration Acquire Licensing RightsOct 26 (Reuters) - The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has eight to 10 filings of possible exchange-traded products for bitcoin in front of it for consideration, SEC Chair Gary Gensler said Thursday. Bitcoin has rallied this week on speculation that SEC approval is imminent for a spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) - seen as a driver of demand because it would allow investors to obtain direct exposure to the cryptocurrency via an exchange-listed product. To date, the SEC has approved only ETFs tied to bitcoin futures contracts. Anticipation around spot ETFs has been rising after the SEC opted not to appeal a court ruling it had been wrong to reject an application from Grayscale Investments to convert its existing bitcoin trust into a spot bitcoin ETF.

The price of bitcoin breached the $34,000 level to hit its highest since May last year, bolstered by positive sentiment about a bitcoin exchange-traded fund. Ether , the second-biggest digital coin, surged to its highest since August, according to Coin Metrics data. Anticipation of a bitcoin ETF grew after the court ruled in favor of crypto-focused asset manager Grayscale over the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in its bid to turn its huge Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) bitcoin fund into an ETF. A bitcoin ETF would give investors a way to gain exposure to bitcoin's price movements without owning the cryptocurrency directly. Bitcoin is considered a highly volatile asset, and its price fluctuations are unpredictable.
